ITEM 3: CHAIRMAN’S REPORT FOR YEAR 2021/2022

This year has seen things getting back to ‘normal’ with the parish council being able to meet face to face.

Significant changes are happening in the village with new housing developments already under way and other areas given the go-ahead for development by Barrow Borough Council.

Negotiations took place over several months with Andrew and Gavin Southward, who very kindly agreed to allow members of the public to use their toilet facilities at Southward’s Barn in the Station yard. The parish council made a donation towards this facility towards this in thanks for their kind commitment to the community.

Other donations were made to the Friends of X112 bus service which helps to finance the X7 Blueworks bus which provides a service for Askam and Ireleth. The parish council also supported our youth groups with donations – Askam Youthi, Cubs and Beavers, Drop Zone and Rainbows and Brownies.

The parish council have supported the Christmas light switch-on organised by Askam and Ireleth Events committee, which was well attended. This year saw the return of the Service of Remembrance in the Memorial Garden with support of the British Legion and Askam Town Band and many of the village organisations taking part.

Councillor Steven Smalley and Councillor Bill Wilson have been working with the Police to set up a speed watch in the village after many complaints about speeding traffic in Askam and Ireleth. The parish council have purchased their own speed gun.

There will be many important changes over the coming months as we move into the Unitary Government – Westmorland and Furness. Elections took place for the new Government and Cllr Daniel Edwards and Ben Shirley were elected for Dalton North. The parish council look forward to work with them as we moved forward and do the best that we can for Askam and Ireleth and make sure the voice of our community is heard. Meetings have already been taking place with Dalton Town Council and Lindal & Marton Parish Council. These will continue and it is hoped that the Joint Rural Committee will be re-instated with Barrow Borough Council soon.
